Upper Mustang Trek Overview

You will see the legendary kingdom of Mustang on the enthralling adventure known as Upper Mustang Trek. You will get to observe the region's distinctive culture and traditions while exploring. You will uncover a secret realm where you will witness Lo-Manthang, the historical Buddhist kingdom of Mustang. Currently, it is not allowed to visit Lo Manthang 5 Story Palace.

For a very long time, access to the Upper Mustang was restricted to foreigners to preserve the area's natural environment and rich cultural history. The Nepali government has enforced expensive entrance permission fees to regulate the flow of visitors in this area of Nepal to preserve the ecosystem. You will look at the untouched natural environment by going on the Upper Mustang Trek. There are no luxurious hotels or contemporary facilities available because the area has not been fully modernized. But you will be able to take in the stunning natural beauty, the amazing desolation, and the extraordinary creation of enormous boulders. Upper Mustang's desolate scenery is given a burst of color by the white-washed home, vibrant prayer flags, historic chortens, and lovely farms. You will be traveling over an old salt trade route when you go on the Upper Mustang Trekking. You can see the historic village of Lo Manthang in the distance as you approach the Lo La Pass. Long prayer wheels, unmarked chortens, and herds of animals ambling across the fields will be seen along the route.

The Upper Mustang Trek via Muktinath starts with a journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara where you will see mountains, ancient settlements, terraced crops, and rushing Trishuli and Marsyandi Rivers. You will take a flight the next day from Pokhara to Jomsom. You must hike to Kagbeni after landing in Jomsom. Your walk will continue to Chele after spending the night in Kagbeni.

You will go to Syangboche from Chele through a route that goes via the towns of Eklo Bhatti and Taklam High Pass. After that, you will go off on your hike from Syangboche to Ghami. This time, you will traverse the Yamada La Pass across a desolate terrain to get to Geling, Tamagaun, and eventually Ghami. Ghar Gumba will be your next trekking destination.

You will go to Lo Manthang from Ghar Gumba while taking in the scenery, which includes Annapurna I, Nilgiri, Tilicho, and Brikuti Mountain. You will descend toward Yara on your upper Mustang trek journey after arriving at Lo Manthang. After leaving Yara, you will hike to Tangye. Your hike will lead you to Chhusang after Tangye. After Chhusang, Muktinath is the next destination on the journey.

With 108 bathing spouts, Muktinath is a sacred location shared by Buddhists and Hindus. The last day of Upper Mustang Trekking over Muktinath is going from Muktinath to Jomsom. You will take an early morning flight to Pokhara after spending the night in Jomsom. The next day, a tourist bus will take you back to Kathmandu, where your Upper Mustang Trek Itinerary Concludes.

Preparation for Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang hikers must invest enough time in physical training and exercise to increase their endurance and enhance their core strength. To strengthen their joint muscles, they should focus on cardiovascular exercises like jogging, cycling, running, and squat jumps. Aerobic exercise may be added to the fitness regimen to enhance balance and give a more secure base for conquering uneven terrain. In addition to being able to walk on varied terrains, trekkers need to be physically fit to successfully finish the Upper Mustang trekking with Muktinath.

You may start with a short hike before going to Nepal and progress to larger hikes as you get more comfortable. Because a lack of confidence can commonly cause discomfort and anxiety, trekkers need to be mentally motivated. It is important to research the weather and schedule for the Upper Mustang trek incorporating Muktinath. It will help you prepare for the trip and provide you with advice on how to handle unfavorable circumstances.

Upper Mustang Trekking Itinerary

At Tribhuwan International Airport, one of our agents will receive you. He will arrange a private ride to the hotel and assist you with check-in as well. After a long journey, you might want to unwind at your hotel or go exploring some of Kathmandu's beautiful attractions. During the briefing of the Upper Mustang Trek Itinerary, you will meet your guide and obtain any missing equipment.

Your upper mustang trekking excursion will begin after boarding a tourist bus following an early breakfast. From Kathmandu, it may take 6 to 7 hours to go to Pokhara. Along the trip, you will pass the lovely Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers, the lush Rocky Mountains, the rivers that join them, and tiny springs. The picturesque Pokhara valley is home to several lakes, including Begnas, Fewa, Rupa, Dipang, Maidi, Khaste, Gunde, and Nyureni. From the Pokhara Valley, you can also see Annapurna, Machapuchare, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Lamjung Himal. After checking at your hotel, you may take a leisurely stroll along the lakefront, rent a boat on Fewa Lake, stop by one of the numerous lakeside pubs before dinner, or just unwind.

The flight through the Himalayas from Pokhara to Jomsom lasts around 25 minutes. The jet takes off from the lovely surroundings of Pokhara and lands at Jomsom Airport, surrounded by barren hills and peaks coated in snow. Since many people travel to Muktinath from Jomsom, Upper Mustang Trekking adventure offers you to watch the spiritual journey of individuals who are looking for enlightenment. A lovely walk leads from Jomsom to the fort of Kagbeni, a former trading station with a Buddhist monastery, up the dry Kali Gandaki River valley. Kagbeni is located just south of the Upper Mustang's restricted region.

To escape the strong Mustang wind in the afternoon, you will begin your walk early in the morning. You must submit your upper mustang trekking permit at the Kagbeni checkpoint before continuing to Chuksang along the eastern bank of the Kali Gandaki River. You will have some magnificent views of Mt. Nilgiri along the journey as it shines orange in the early morning. You will need sunglasses and maybe a face mask to protect your mouth and nose because the region next to the river can be windy and polluted with dust.

You will next travel through the distinctive red sandstone pillars and rock formations of the Mustang, created by thousands of years of erosion, and arrive at Tangbe Village. A charming village, Tangbe features red and whitewashed homes, lovely apple orchards, and barley fields. After there, a somewhat tight canyon will lead you to Chele, a little settlement perched on a ridge.

Today Upper Mustang Trek difficulty level will increase slightly as you will gain an elevation of around 800 meters. You will ascend a steep spur and a steep canyon from Chele to Eklo Bhatti before reaching the high pass of Taklam La (3625 m/ 11,893ft). Views of Tilicho Peak, Damodar Danda, and Yaskawa Kang will be seen side by side as you ascend. To go to Samar, you must pass across the Taklam La pass. From Samar, one may have a stunning view of Mount Nilgiri. Additionally, horse and mule caravans frequently halt here to relax. After passing the Rangchyung Chorten, which is decorated in red, black, yellow, and white, you will drop into a sizable gorge from Samar and continue your journey to Syangboche. After around three hours, the route arrives at Syanbochen through juniper trees and the well-known Ramchung Cave.

From Syangboche, you will begin your Upper Mustang Trek across the stunning landscape of the region. The day starts with a climb to Yamada La Pass (3845m/ 12,614ft), passing over a stunning desert environment and a few outlying towns. The Kali Gandaki canyon and beautiful mountain vistas are both visible from this steep ascent. Then, as you go across the area, you will pass via Tamagaon and Chhunggar, among other towns. Before reaching Jhaite, this path will travel through traditional communities. Along the way, the path passes poplar trees and barley fields until arriving at Nyi Pass (4010m/ 13,156ft), where the ascent gets rather challenging. Then you will make your way down along the tranquil route to Ghami.

After a lovely breakfast, you will set out on your excursion. You will pass through the driest area of Mustang on your adventure today. Your Upper Mustang Trek will begin with ascents on the paths to Charang. You will cross the Ghami Khola and ascend to a plateau adorned with a lengthy Mani wall. The centerpiece of this trip is a Mani wall that is 250 meters long. After traveling through a variety of landscapes and crossing a lovely river, you will reach the breathtaking Tsarang La Pass (3870m/ 12,696ft).

From Tsarang La Pass, you will make your way toward Charang. From this picturesque alpine community, you can see the Rocky Mountains, sparsely populated areas, and snow-capped mountains in all directions. A large medieval fort and a crimson Gompa with an amazing collection of sculptures are located east of the hamlet.

Your trail will take you to Lo-Manthang today, which is the final goal. Your Upper Mustang Trek will continue as you travel through breathtaking scenery. From Charang, you will descend to the Charang Chu Canyon before beginning the broad trail's slow ascent. These remote treks will provide amazing views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and other prominent Himalayan peaks. As you go to Lo Manthang, you will pass through the lovely Sungda Chorten and the Lo pass (3850m/ 12,631ft), from Lo Pass you will have stunning views of the Nilgiri, Annapurna I, Bhrikuti, and Tilicho peaks. Kingdom Lo once had Lo Manthang as its capital. The settlement is surrounded by walls and is home to several Lo communities. Lo was a kingdom until 2008 when Nepal's federal repub

The acclimatization and exploring day of Lo-Manthang is today as per the Upper Mustang Trekking Itinerary. The distance from Lo-Manthang to the Tibetan border is around 50 kilometers. Lo-Manthang served as the main commercial junction for garments and salt between Nepal and Tibet. A noticeable and alluring aspect of this lovely village is the 6-meter wall. Everywhere you turn in Lo-Manthang, you will see stunning towers. You can see several important cultural and religious sites in this walled city.

Among the most important monuments are the Thubchen Monastery, the museum, the Jampa Monastery, and locations for Thangka paintings. The government of Nepal opened the Lo-Manthang region for visitors in 1992. Although this township is now open for visitors, just 1000 travelers are allowed to visit this lovely location yearly. This location is only accessible to travelers from authorized trekking agencies. You will go back to your accommodation to rest for the night after doing some exploration.

Today, you will depart from Lo-Manthang and go via Lo La before arriving in Dhi. This is the beginning of a magnificent Upper Mustang Trekking with Muktinath that will offer an incredible panoramic view of the surroundings. After hiking along a ridge and then descending steeply through crumbling cliffs, you will reach Dhi. The scenic settlement is situated along the banks of the Kali Gandaki, where you can find a collection of homes, a stretch of fields, and some trees. Before continuing to Yara, you will take a break for lunch at Dhi. A lovely village named Yara is located far above the river. Like most of the villages in the Upper Mustang, this one has terraced fields as well as a collection of traditional houses. It's the only location in your lodge where you might encounter a group of enterprising local women selling bracelets and trinkets.

You will ascend and descend via a peculiar cliff and cross numerous beautiful plateaus on the adventurous Upper Mustang Trek from Yara. After passing through the Dhechyang Khola valley, the trek continues towards Tangge while taking in breathtaking Himalayan vistas. While going down the riverbank, you may locate Shaligram (Ammonoid fossils), which are dark in color. The vista is breathtaking as you make the last descent to Tangge, which is hidden under impossible-to-form granite cliffs. Beautiful scenery surrounds the settlement, including a wide riverbed and the iconic Mustang Mountains. You will find various vibrant chortens and stunning mani walls in Tangge that will leave you speechless. Additionally, the welcoming villagers and magnificent Mustang horses in Tangye village will win your heart.

You must begin today's journey extremely early since Tangge to Chhusang is the longest day's trek in the entire upper mustang trek with Muktinath. The trekkers will indulge in the scenery along the way, taking in views of the nearby villages, rivers, cliffs, and breathtaking Himalayan Mountain peaks. The path leading to Pa, a deserted village, has more climbing and declining. Following Pa, you will be treated to some extremely amazing rock formations, including hordes of sharp rocky pinnacles. The Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, and Nilgiri snow-capped peaks are also visible in the distance. Your trek will cross Pa's settlement and then take the Siyarko Tangk Danda route to Chhusang via Chhomnang. During the Tangge to Chhusang hike, you may witness a Himalayan salt mine in Nepal.

Starting from Chhusang and traveling through Tetang, Gyu Lo Pass, and Jhong, the upper Mustang trek will reach Muktinath today. The spectacular Himalayan peaks that reach Tibet to the north can be seen from Gyu Lo Pass, and the Annapurna range can be seen in the distance. There are numerous Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims to the holy site of Muktinath. In addition, after completing the Thorong La, it is where trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit descend down. Chumig Gyatsa, which translates as "A Hundred Waters" in Tibetan, is the name given to Muktinath by Buddhists. An everlasting flame, 108 bathing spouts, a Buddhist monastery, and various Hindu temples are all located within the walled Muktinath temple premise

Today's mountain climb from Muktinath to Jomsom is another lengthy trek for upper Mustang trekkers. Despite traveling a great distance today, descending is considerably simpler than ascending. You will hike from Ranipauwa and Jharkot, two charming Thakali villages in the region, to Lupra. The charming settlement of Lupra is in a small valley, where you may see a Bonpo Buddhist cave monastery. A monastery by the name of Lama Tuku Lama is located above the settlement. There are just no words to describe the breathtaking vistas of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tukuche, and other nearby snow-capped summits. The broad, level path from these communities continues along Panda River until it joins the route to Jomsom, the administrative center of the Mustang district, which is situated along the banks of the windy Kali Gandaki River valley.

You will take a flight to Pokhara after getting up early in the morning to take in the stunning dawn. The 25-minute beautiful mountain flight to Pokhara passes through several picturesque sceneries in the area. When you get to Pokhara, you may stroll about the lovely lakeside city, check out some sights, and celebrate your successful completion of the upper Mustang trek with Muktinath. Pokhara is a popular tourist destination with fantastic places to explore. Some of the notable sites in this city are Phewa Lake, World Peace Stupa, Devi's fall, international mountain museums, and many more. You may also explore the picturesque Lakeside and unwind in its inviting ambiance. Hotels, cafés, bars, restaurants, and clubs may be found in the Lakeside region.

You will board a tourist bus this morning after waking up in Pokhara to travel back to Kathmandu. The 205 kilometers/ 127 miles that separate Pokhara from Kathmandu follows the enthralling Marsyangdi River and then the Trishuli River. The route from Pokhara to Kathmandu passes through various attractive market areas, including Damauli bazaar, Dumre bazaar, Mugling Bazaar, and others. The route also offers breathtaking vistas of hills, rivers, and mountains covered in snow. When you arrive in the Kathmandu valley, a member of our crew will assist you to your accommodation so you can freshen up before spending your final evening in Nepal shopping or touring Thamel to conclude the upper Mustang trekking journey.

The final day of your upper Mustang trek with Muktinath has arrived. When your flight is due to leave, one of our staff members will help you go to the airport. FAQ's

FAQs

How hard is Upper Mustang trek?

The difficulty rating for the Upper Mustang trek is moderate. This is neither as easy as the simple hikes nor as challenging as the severe treks. As with other treks, you may, to some extent, adjust the Upper Mustang trek's degree of difficulty to fit your needs.

Is there electricity and Wi-Fi facilities on Upper Mustang Trek?

All the teahouses where you will spend the night throughout the walk have power. Paying a little fee will allow you to recharge your phones, laptops, or iPads. We don't recommend bringing your laptop if you want to use the free Wi-Fi that is not available along the walking path. On an hourly basis, some teahouses do provide Wi-Fi but don't anticipate high-speed access on the far-off trails.

How to prevent altitude mountain sickness during Upper Mustang Trek?

Here are a few tips from our experienced guides to avoid altitude sickness during the Upper Mustang trek including Muktinath;

What are the possibilities of drinking water on upper Mustang trek?

One option for getting water is to purchase mineral water bottles from stores located along the paths. Another way to purify tap or stream water before drinking is by bringing reusable water bottles and other types of water purification agents with you. The teahouses and the numerous streams and rivers along the path also offer the opportunity to replenish water bottles. We suggest drinking boiling water when you're at your lodge. Those who insist on exclusively drinking mineral water should be prepared to spend a little bit more money because the cost of bottled water increases as you move higher up.

Can we take part in the Tiji Festival during the Upper Mustang trek?

You may participate in the Tiji Festival in Upper Mustang if you extend your journey by a certain number of days. You can also skip the Mustang Tiji Festival Trek. Please be aware that the three-day celebration only occurs once a year, usually in May or June.
